Eating Habits of the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad was asked about a certain type of food and he said that he does not eat it, but did not say that it is forbidden.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that: the Messenger of Allah was asked about mastigures when he was on the Minbar and he said? "I do not eat them, but I do not say that they are Haram".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when making decisions regarding what we consume as Muslims; strive to make sure our food is halal and permissible according to Islamic law; follow in terms of our own eating habits; respect Allah's judgement on matters related to haram or halal.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar tells us about the eating habits of the Prophet Muhammad. He was asked about a certain type of food while on the Minbar and he said that he does not eat it, but did not say that it is forbidden. This teaches us to be mindful when making decisions regarding what we consume as Muslims, as we should always strive to make sure our food is halal and permissible according to Islamic law. We should also be careful when making statements regarding what is haram or halal for others, as only Allah knows best what is truly permissible or forbidden in Islam. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example for us to follow in terms of our own eating habits; if something isn't good enough for the Prophet himself then surely it isn't good enough for us either!
