Sunan an-Nasai 4243 (Book 41, Hadith 22) #18776
The Permissibility of Tanning Unslaughtered Animals

SUMMARY: The Prophet of Allah allowed the use of a waterskin made from an unslaughtered dead animal, as long as it was tanned.

It was narrated from Salamah bin Al-Muhabbaq that: during the campaign of Tabuk, the Prophet of Allah called for water from a woman. She said: "I only have a waterskin of mine made from an (unslaughtered) dead animal". He said: "Didn't you tan it?" She said: "Of course". He said: "Then it's tanning is its slaughter". (Daif)

QUICK LESSONS:
Think creatively for solutions while adhering to Islamic teachings and values .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permissibility of using a waterskin made from an unslaughtered dead animal, as long as it has been tanned. During the campaign of Tabuk, the Prophet Muhammad called for water from a woman who had a waterskin made from an unslaughed dead animal. He asked her if she had tanned it and when she said yes, he said that its tanning was its slaughtering. This shows us that tanning can be used to make something permissible which would otherwise not be allowed in Islam. It also teaches us to think outside the box and find solutions to our problems in creative ways while still adhering to Islamic teachings and values.
