Sacrifice for Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) commanded people to do good deeds and feed the poor, and to sacrifice animals for charity when they reach an age where they can be used to carry loads.

It was narrated that Nubaishah said: "A man called out to the Prophet and said: 'We used to sacrifice the 'Atirah - ie, during the Jahiliyyah - in Rajab; what do you command us to do?' He said: 'Sacrifice, whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and feed (the poor)'. He said: 'We used to sacrifice the Fara' during the Jahiliyyah; what do you command us to do?' He said: 'For every flock of grazing animals, feed the firstborn as you feed the rest of your flock until it reaches an age where it could be used to carry loads, then sacrifice it, and give its meat in charity, for that is good"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do Good Deeds And Feed The Poor; Sacrifice Animals For Charity When They Reach An Age Where They Can Be Used To Carry Loads; Give Its Meat In Charity As This Is Considered Good

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about sacrificing animals for charity. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked about sacrificing animals during the Jahiliyyah period, which was a time before Islam. He said that it is good to do so in any month, but also commanded people to do good deeds and feed the poor. He also said that when a flock of grazing animals has a firstborn, it should be fed like all other members of the flock until it reaches an age where it can be used to carry loads, then sacrificed and its meat given in charity as this is considered good. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to do good deeds and help those who are less fortunate than us by feeding them or giving them money or other forms of assistance. It also teaches us that we should not forget our religious obligations such as sacrificing animals for charity if we are able to afford it.
