Sacrifice and Charity in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his followers to sacrifice animals for Allah, and to give the meat in charity. He also encouraged them to remember Allah and do good deeds.

It was narrated from Nubaishah, a man of Hudhail, that the Prophet said: "I used to forbid you to store the meat of the sacrifices for more than three days so that there would be enough for everyone. But now Allah, the mighty and sublime, has bestowed plenty upon us, so eat some, give some in charity and store some, For these days are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah". A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the 'Atirah during the Jahiliyyah in Rajab; what do you command us to do?" He said: "Sacrifice to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and feed (the poor)". He said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the Fara' during the Jahiliyyah; what do you command us to do?" He said: "For every flock of grazing animals, feed the firstborn as you feed the rest of your flock, until it reaches an age where it could be used to carry loads, then sacrifice it, and give its meat in charity to the wayfarer, for that is good".

QUICK LESSONS:
Remembering God while doing good deeds such as giving charity or sacrificing an animal; helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves by providing food or other necessities when needed; following Islamic teachings even if something was done differently before Islam came into existence; eating from what has been sacrificed; storing part of what has been sacrificed; giving part away in charity .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is teaching his followers about sacrificing animals for Allah. He encourages them to give some of the meat in charity, as well as store some for later use. He also reminds them that these days are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah. The Prophet then goes on to explain how they should sacrifice their 'Atirah during Rajab and their Fara' during any month they choose. For every flock of grazing animals, he instructs them to feed the firstborn until it can carry loads before sacrificing it and giving its meat in charity to a wayfarer - which is considered good by Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should always remember our Creator while doing good deeds such as giving charity or sacrificing an animal for Him - even if it was something we used to do during pre-Islamic times like Jahiliyyah. It also shows us how important it is for us Muslims to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves by providing food or other necessities when needed.
