Menstruation and Religion

SUMMARY: Women do not have to pray or fast during their menstrual cycle.

Narrated Abu Sa'id: The Prophet said, "Isn't it true that a woman does not pray and does not fast on menstruating? And that is the defect (a loss) in her religion".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be understanding of others’ needs; Respect different circumstances; Maintain faith in God; Practice religion without feeling punished for something out of one's control.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the relationship between menstruation and religion. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id that the Prophet Muhammad said that when a woman is menstruating she does not have to pray or fast. This means that women are exempt from these religious obligations during this time as it can be difficult for them to perform them due to physical discomfort. The Prophet Muhammad was very understanding of women's needs and did not want them to suffer any more than necessary while still maintaining their faith in God. He also wanted women to be able to practice their religion without feeling like they were being punished for something out of their control. This hadith teaches us that we should always be understanding of others’ needs and respect the fact that everyone has different circumstances which may affect how they practice their faith.
