Taking Khumus from the Fay

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not allowed to take anything from the Fay, except Khumus, which will come back to the owner.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that: the Messenger of Allah went to a camel, and took a hair from its hump between his fingers and said: "I am not entitled to take anything from the Fay, not even this, except the Khumus, and the Khumus will come back to you".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation in which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went to a camel and took a hair from its hump between his fingers. He then said that he was not entitled to take anything from the Fay, except for Khumus. The word ‘Fay’ refers to animals that are owned by someone but are free-roaming in an open area such as a pasture or desert. In this case, it refers to camels owned by someone but roaming freely in an open area. The word ‘Khumus’ refers to one fifth of something that is taken as charity or tax for public use and benefit. In this hadith, it is referring specifically to one fifth of what is taken as charity or tax on animals such as camels and sheep that roam freely in an open area like pastures or deserts. This hadith teaches us about taking responsibility for our possessions and being mindful of how we use them for public benefit while also respecting other people's property rights at the same time.
