Making Vows and What We Can Control

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that one should not make a vow to do something that is not in their control.

It was narrated that 'Imran bin Husain said: The Messenger of Allah said: "There is no vow to commit an act of disobedience or with regard to that which the son of Adam does not possess".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make sure your vows are within your power and ability so they can be fulfilled responsibly .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us an important lesson about making vows. A vow is a promise to do something or refrain from doing something. He said that we should not make a vow to do something that we cannot control or have no power over. This means that if you cannot guarantee the outcome of your actions, then it would be wrong for you to make a promise about it. For example, if you are trying to get into college and you make a vow saying “If I get accepted into this college, I will donate $100” then this would be wrong because there is no guarantee of whether or not you will get accepted into the college in the first place. Therefore, it would be better for us to only make promises about things we can actually control and have power over such as our own behavior and attitude towards others.
