The Forbidden Practice of Making Vows

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad forbade making vows and said that they do not bring any good, but are just a way of taking money from the stingy.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah forbade vows and said: "They do not bring any good; they are just a means of taking wealth from the miserly".
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْصُورٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَهَى عَنِ النَّذْرِ وَقَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّهُ لاَ يَأْتِي بِخَيْرٍ إِنَّمَا يُسْتَخْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ الْبَخِيلِ
