Making Expiation for Oaths

SUMMARY: If one makes an oath and then finds something better than it, they should offer expiation for their oath and do the better thing.

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah that the Messenger of Allah said: "If any one of you swears an oath, then he sees something better than it, let him offer expiation for his oath, and look at what is better and do it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make sure to look at all of your options carefully before making any decisions so that you can be sure of choosing what is most beneficial in the long run . Offer expiations when necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
An oath is a promise made to Allah that one will do or not do something. In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that if we make an oath and then find something better than it, we should offer expiation for our oath and do the better thing instead. This means that if we make a promise to Allah but later realize that there is a more beneficial action or decision, we should take back our original promise and replace it with the new one. This hadith also teaches us to always strive to choose what is best in any situation. We must look at all of our options carefully before making any decisions so that we can be sure of choosing what is most beneficial in the long run.
