Sunan an-Nasai 3703 (Book 32, Hadith 16) #18317
The Inadmissibility of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to take back a gift, except in the case of a father and his son.

It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from Tawus, from Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas, that they said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'It is not permissible for anyone to give a gift then take it back, except a father with regard to what he gives to his son. The likeness of the one who gives a gift then takes it back, is that of the dog which eats then when it is full it vomits, then it goes back to its vomit'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Give gifts without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of giving gifts without expecting anything in return. It is narrated from four people that the Prophet Muhammad said that it is not permissible for anyone to give a gift then take it back, except for a father with regard to what he gives to his son. The Prophet Muhammad used an analogy to explain this concept; he compared someone who takes back their gift after giving it as similar to a dog which eats then when it is full vomits and goes back to its vomit. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our gifts and not expect anything in return as this would be considered wrong according to Islamic teachings.
