The Gift of Giving

SUMMARY: Taking back a gift is not a good thing to do.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Tawus, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah said: "The one who takes back his gift, is like the dog which vomits then goes back to its vomit".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of giving and how it should be done with sincerity. It warns against taking back gifts as it is similar to a dog that vomits and then goes back to its vomit. This means that taking back a gift is not something that should be done as it shows lack of sincerity in giving the gift in the first place. It also teaches us to give without expecting anything in return and with an open heart. We should also remember that whatever we give away will come back to us one way or another, either through reward from Allah or through other people's kindness towards us.
