The Unpleasantness of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet is comparing the act of taking back a gift to that of a dog which vomits and then eats its own vomit.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet said: "The likeness of the one who gives a gift then takes it back, is that of a dog which vomits, then goes back to its vomit and eats it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your gifts without expecting anything in return from them .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith from the Prophet Muhammad, narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, speaks about the unpleasantness of taking back gifts. It compares this action to that of a dog which vomits and then goes back to eat its own vomit. This comparison is meant to illustrate how disgusting it is for someone to take back something they have already given away as a gift. It teaches us that we should not take back what we have already given away, as it reflects poorly on our character and shows lack of generosity. We should be generous with our gifts and not expect anything in return for them; if we do so, Allah will reward us greatly in this life and the next.
