Fairness in Giving Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) advised a man to be fair and just when giving gifts to his children.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin Mas'ud that a man came to the Prophet and said: "I have given a gift to my son, so bear witness". He said: "Do you have any other children?" He said: "Yes". He said: "Have you given them something like that which you have given him?" He said: "No". He said: "Shall I bear witness to unfairness?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and justice in our dealings with others; Treat everyone equally regardless of their relationship with us; Give all your children equal gifts; Show no favoritism or partiality towards any one person over another; Do not bear witness if you have not given all your children something similar.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fairness and justice when it comes to giving gifts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked by a man if he could bear witness for him after he gave a gift to one of his sons, but not the others. The Prophet ﷺ replied that it would be unfair and unjust for him to do so, as the other children should also receive something similar. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for fairness and justice in our dealings with others, especially our own family members. We should never show favoritism or partiality towards any one person over another, even if they are related to us or close friends. We must treat everyone equally and fairly regardless of their relationship with us or anyone else.
