Fairness in Giving Gifts

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) advised Bashir bin Sa'd to be fair and equitable when giving gifts to his children.

It was narrated that 'Amir said: "I was told that Bashir bin Sa'd came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my wife 'Amrah bint Rawahah told me to give a gift to her son Nu'man, and she told me to ask you to bear witness to that'. The Prophet said: 'Do you have any other children?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'Have you given them something like that which you have given to this one?' He said: 'No'. He said: 'Then do not ask me to bear witness to unfairness'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be fair and equitable when distributing wealth/resources among family members/others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fairness and equity in giving gifts. It was narrated by 'Amir that Bashir bin Sa'd came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking him to bear witness for a gift he wanted to give his son Nu'man. The Prophet ﷺ asked if he had given any other children something similar and when he said no, the Prophet ﷺ advised him not to ask for unfairness. This hadith teaches us that we should be fair and equitable when distributing our wealth or resources among our family members or others. We should not show favoritism or partiality towards one person over another as this would lead us into committing injustice which is prohibited in Islam. We must strive for justice even if it means sacrificing our own desires or preferences.
