Sunan an-Nasai 3541 (Book 27, Hadith 155) #18155
Mourning Period for Widows in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that the mourning period for a woman whose husband has died is four months and ten days, rather than the year-long mourning period practiced during pre-Islamic times.

It was narrated from Zainab that a woman asked Umm Salamah and Umm Habibah whether she could put on kohl during her 'Iddah following her husband's death. She said: "A woman came to the Prophet and asked him about that, and he said: 'During the Jahiliyyah, if her husband died, one of you would stay (in mourning) for a year, then she would throw a piece of dung then come out. Rather it (the mourning period) is four months and ten days, until the term prescribed is fulfilled'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow the prescribed time frame for grieving losses

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a woman's husband dies, she should observe a mourning period of four months and ten days, rather than the year long mourning period practiced during pre Islamic times. This is an important teaching of Islam as it shows how much respect and care is given to widows in this religion. It also teaches us to be patient in difficult times, as Allah has prescribed this time frame for us to grieve our losses before we can move on with our lives. Furthermore, it teaches us to be mindful of our actions as they are being observed by Allah at all times.
