Fasting on 'Ashura Day

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered Muslims to fast on the 10th of Muharram ('Ashura), but when fasting in Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of 'Ashura' was abandoned.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet observed the fast on the 10th of Muharram ('Ashura), and ordered (Muslims) to fast on that day, but when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of the 'Ashura' was abandoned'.Abdullah did not use to fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what has been prescribed by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ over any other voluntary acts we may do out of piety or devotion.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Umar states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered Muslims to fast on the 10th day of Muharram, which is known as Ashura. However, when fasting during the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it replaced fasting on Ashura and it became optional for those who wanted to continue doing so. Abdullah ibn Umar did not usually fast on this day unless it coincided with his regular routine. This hadith teaches us that we should prioritize our religious obligations and follow what has been prescribed by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ over any other voluntary acts we may do out of piety or devotion.
