Fasting on Ashura in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) allowed Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura, but it was not mandatory.

Narrated 'Aisha: (The tribe of) Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and then Allah's Apostle ordered (Muslims) to fast on it till the fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed; whereupon the Prophet said, "He who wants to fast (on 'Ashura') may fast, and he who does not want to fast may not fast".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic practices & traditions , Obey Allah's will & guidance

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by 'Aisha talks about fasting on the day of Ashura. Before Islam, the tribe of Quraish used to fast on this day. After Prophet Muhammad's revelation, he ordered Muslims to fast until fasting in Ramadan was prescribed. He also said that those who wanted to fast could do so and those who did not want to were not obligated to do so. This hadith teaches us that although we should follow Islamic practices and traditions, we are still given freedom of choice when it comes to religious obligations such as fasting. It also shows us that even though some practices may have been done before Islam, they may be changed or modified after its revelation according to Allah's will and guidance for His people.
