The Perfecting Power of Medina

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) refused to cancel the pledge of a bedouin who had embraced Islam and wanted to emigrate to Medina, saying that Medina is like a furnace which expels out bad persons and makes good ones perfect.

Narrated Jabir: A bedouin came to the Prophet and gave a pledge of allegiance for embracing Islam. The next day he came with fever and said (to the Prophet ), "Please cancel my pledge (of embracing Islam and of emigrating to Medina)". The Prophet refused (that request) three times and said, "Medina is like a furnace, it expels out the impurities (bad persons) and selects the good ones and makes them perfect".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of Medina in perfecting people. It was narrated by Jabir that a bedouin came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and gave his pledge for embracing Islam and emigrating to Medina. However, he fell ill the next day and asked for his pledge to be cancelled. The Prophet ﷺ refused this request three times, saying that Medina is like a furnace which expels out bad persons and makes good ones perfect. This hadith teaches us that we should not give up on our commitments even when faced with difficulties or hardships as it is through these challenges that we can become better people. We should also strive towards making ourselves better Muslims by emigrating towards places where we can learn more about our faith such as Mecca or Medina if possible.
