Sahih al-Bukhari 1884 (Book 29, Hadith 18) #1807
Expulsion of Bad People from Medina

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how Medina expels bad people from it, just like fire purifies iron.

Narrated Zaid bin Thabit: When the Prophet went out for (the battle of) Uhud, some of his companions (hypocrites) returned (home). A party of the believers remarked that they would kill those (hypocrites) who had returned, but another party said that they would not kill them. So, this Divine Inspiration was revealed: "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites". (4:88) The Prophet said, "Medina expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels the impurities of iron".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your community clean and free from bad people. Respect others even if they have betrayed you or done something wrong. Follow Allah's commands without hesitation or division among yourselves.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the importance of keeping a community clean and free from bad people. It was narrated by Zaid bin Thabit that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ went out for battle, some of his companions returned home. Some believers wanted to kill them for their betrayal but others disagreed. Then Allah revealed a verse in the Quran which said “Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites” (4:88). The Prophet ﷺ then said “Medina expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels impurities of iron”. This means that just like fire purifies iron by burning away its impurities, so too does Medina expel bad people who do not belong there and thus keeps itself pure and clean.
