QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for marriage traditions ; honoring commitments made in marriages ; understanding expectations around marriages ; taking marriages seriously .
EXPLANATIONS:
During the time of Prophet Muhammad, marriage was an important part of life. When it came to marriage dowries or mahr as it is known in Arabic, there was a set amount that was expected to be paid by the groom. This amount was twelve uqiyahs and a nashsh which equates to five hundred dirhams. This shows us that even during this time period there were expectations when it came to marriage and what should be given as part of the dowry. It also shows us that even though times have changed since then, marriage is still an important part of life today and should not be taken lightly.
