Breastfeeding as a Means of Making Adopted Sons Unlawful for Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad advised a woman to breastfeed her adopted son in order to make him unlawful for marriage.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "Sahlah came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Salim enters upon us and he understands what men understand, and knows what men know'. He said: 'Breast-feed him, and you will become unlawful to him thereby'. (Ibn Abi Mulaikah, one of the narrators said:) For a year I did not narrate this, then I met Al-Qasim and he said: 'Narrate it and do not worry about it'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow advice given by the Prophet Muhammad ; create strong bonds between mothers & their children ; understand adoption laws within Islam ; respect relationships between adoptive parents & children .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith narrated by 'Aishah and Ibn Abi Mulaikah, the Prophet Muhammad advised a woman named Sahlah to breastfeed her adopted son in order to make him unlawful for marriage. This is because breastfeeding creates an unbreakable bond between the mother and child that is similar to that of biological parents and children. By breastfeeding her adopted son, Sahlah would be able to protect herself from any potential harm or scandal that could arise if he were ever married without being aware of their relationship as adoptive mother and son. Al-Qasim later confirmed this advice given by the Prophet Muhammad when Ibn Abi Mulaikah hesitated in narrating it due to its sensitive nature. This hadith teaches us about the importance of protecting ourselves from potential harm or scandal through lawful means such as breastfeeding an adopted child so they become unlawful for marriage with us or our family members.
