Breast-Feeding and Family Ties

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked about the daughter of Hamzah as a potential wife and he said that she is his brother through breast-feeding.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "Mention was made to the Messenger of Allah of the daughter of Hamzah (as a potential wife). He said: 'She is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding'." (One of the narrators) Shu'bah said: "Qatadah heard this from Jabir bin Zaid".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect all members of society; understand that two people can be considered brothers without being related by blood or marriage; maintain strong family ties.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of family ties in Islam. It was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that when the Messenger of Allah was asked about the daughter of Hamzah as a potential wife for someone, he said that she is his brother through breast-feeding. This means that even if two people are not related by blood or marriage they can still be considered brothers if they were both breastfed from the same woman. This shows us how important it is to have strong family ties in Islam and how far those ties can extend beyond just blood relatives. It also teaches us to respect all members of our community regardless of their relation to us because we may be related in ways we don't even know about!
