Prohibiting Marriage with Breast-Fed Relatives

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) not being allowed to marry the daughter of his brother through breast-feeding.

It was narrated that 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why do you choose wives from among Quraish and not from among us?' He said: 'Do you have anyone in mind?' I said: 'Yes, the daughter of Hamzah'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'She is not permissible for me (to marry); she is the daughter of my brother through breast-feeding'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek knowledge before taking action ; Follow Islamic teachings ; Respect family ties ; Understand prohibitions in Islam ; Honor family members’ rights over oneself .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's prohibition of marriage between relatives who are related through breast-feeding. In this hadith, 'Ali asked why the Prophet chose wives from among Quraish and not from among them, to which he replied that he was not allowed to marry the daughter of his brother through breast-feeding. This teaches us that it is prohibited in Islam for a man to marry a woman who has been breastfed by his mother or any other relative, as they are considered siblings due to their shared milk relationship. It also shows us that even though one may have good intentions and desires, it does not mean that they should act upon them if it goes against Islamic teachings and laws. Furthermore, this hadith highlights how important it is for Muslims to seek knowledge before making decisions or taking action on something so as not to go against Islamic teachings and laws unknowingly.
