The Consequences of Taking Back Charity

SUMMARY: Taking back charity is like a dog going back to its own vomit and should not be done.

It was narrated from Zaid bin Aslam that his father said: "I heard 'Umar say: 'I gave a horse to someone to ride in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and the one who kept it neglected it. I wanted to buy it back from him, and I thought that he would sell it at a cheap price. I asked the Messenger for Allah about that and he said: Do not buy it, even if he gives it to you for a Dirham. The one who takes back his charity is like the dog that goes back to its own vomit"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously in Allah's cause without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the consequences of taking back charity that has been given away. It was narrated by Zaid bin Aslam from his father who heard it from 'Umar. In this hadith, 'Umar talks about giving a horse to someone in the cause of Allah and how he wanted to buy it back when he found out that the person neglected it. He asked the Prophet Muhammad for advice on this matter and was told not to buy it even if offered for a dirham as taking back charity is like a dog going back to its own vomit which is an unpleasant sight. This hadith teaches us that we should not take our charity or donations back once they have been given away as this will bring shame upon us and will be considered an act of ingratitude towards Allah's blessings upon us. We should also remember that whatever we give away in His cause will be rewarded manifold in both worlds so there is no need for us to take them back again.
