The Virtue of Voluntary Fasting

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that voluntary fasting is like a man who sets aside some of his wealth to give in charity, and he can choose whether or not to do so.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah came to me one day and said: 'Do you have anything (to eat)?' I said: 'No'. he said: 'Then I am fasting'. Then he came to me after that day, and I had been given some Hais. I had kept some for him as he liked Hais. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have been given some Hais and I kept some for you'. He said: 'Bring it here. I started the day fasting'. Then he ate some of it, then he said: 'The likeness of a voluntary fast is that of a man who allocated some of his wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it, and if he wishes he may keep it"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the virtue of voluntary fasting. It was narrated by 'Aishah that the Prophet Muhammad came to her one day and asked if she had anything to eat, and when she said no, he said he was fasting. On another occasion, she had been given some Hais which the Prophet liked, so she kept some for him. He then ate it while saying that a voluntary fast is like a man who sets aside some of his wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it away, but if not then he can keep it. This teaches us that we should strive for voluntary acts of worship such as fasting as they are highly rewarded by Allah SWT even though we are not obligated to do them. We should also strive for charitable giving as this is an act which will be greatly rewarded by Allah SWT both in this life and the hereafter.
