Sunan an-Nasai 1057 (Book 12, Hadith 29) #15665
Raising Hands in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to raise his hands when he started to pray, and when he raised his head from bowing, and when he said "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" and "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd". He did not raise his hands between the two prostrations.

It was narrated from Salim, from his father, that: The Messenger of Allah used to raise his hands until they were in level with his shoulders when he started to pray, and when he raised his head from bowing he did likewise, and when he said: Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him)" he said: "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (Our Lord, to You be praise)" and he did not raise his hands between the two prostrations.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow examples set by beloved prophet ; Supplicate to God ; Worship God ; Respect religious practices ; Obey commands from God ; Be humble before Him .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Salim from his father speaks about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of prayer. When the Prophet began praying, he would raise both of his hands up until they were level with his shoulders. After bowing down in prayer, he would again raise both of his hands up until they were level with his shoulders. When saying “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah” or “Rabbana wa lakal-hamd” during prayer, the Prophet would not lift up both of his hands but instead keep them at shoulder level. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the example set by our beloved prophet while performing salat or prayers as it is a form of worshiping Allah SWT. We should also remember that raising our hands during prayer is an act of supplication to Allah SWT for His mercy and blessings upon us all.
