Sunan an-Nasai 846 (Book 10, Hadith 70) #15454
Late Prayer is Better than No Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions were travelling and stopped to rest, but the Prophet was worried they would miss prayer. Bilal offered to wake them up, but he fell asleep himself. The Prophet then reminded them that Allah takes our souls when He wills and sends them back when He wills, so they should stand up for prayer even if it is late.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah that his father said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah when some of the people said: 'Why do you not stop with us to rest awhile, 0 Messenger of Allah ?' He said: 'I am afraid that you will sleep and miss the prayer'. Bilal said:'I will wake you up'. So they lay down and slept, and Bilal leaned back on his mount. Then the Messenger of Allah woke up when the sun had already started to rise, and he said: '0 Bilal, what about what you told us?' He said: 'I have never slept like that before'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, takes your souls when He wills and sends them back when He wills'. Stand up 0 Bilal and call the people to prayer'. Then Bilal stood up and & called the Adhan, and they performed Wudu' - that is, when the sun had risen (fully) - "then he stood and lead them in prayer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an effort to pray as soon as possible even if you are running late or have missed a prayer due to sleeping or any other reason . Be thankful for every moment you have been given on this earth by Him . Show selflessness like Bilal did .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith reminds us of the importance of prayer in Islam. Even if we are running late or have missed a prayer due to sleeping or any other reason, we should still make an effort to pray as soon as possible. It also teaches us that our lives are in Allah's hands; He gives life and takes it away whenever He wills. We must remember this lesson and be thankful for every moment we have been given on this earth by Him. Furthermore, this hadith also shows us how Bilal was willing to sacrifice his own sleep in order for everyone else not to miss their prayers - a great example of selflessness!
