Sunan an-Nasai 767 (Book 9, Hadith 26) #15375
Knowledge of Quran Overcomes Physical Appearance

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a young boy who was chosen to lead the prayer due to his knowledge of the Quran, despite wearing a torn cloak.

It was narrated that 'Amr bin Salamah said: "When my people came back from the Prophet they said that he had said: 'Let the one who recites the Quran most lead you in prayer'. So they called me and taught me how to bow and prostrate, and I used to lead them in prayer, wearing a torn cloak, and they used to say to my father: 'Will you not conceal your son's backside from us?"'

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for excellence in religious studies

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how knowledge and piety are more important than physical appearance. It was narrated that 'Amr bin Salamah said that when his people returned from visiting the Prophet they told him that he said "Let the one who recites the Quran most lead you in prayer." So they called upon Amr and taught him how to bow and prostrate in prayer. Despite wearing a torn cloak, Amr was chosen to lead them in prayer due to his knowledge of the Quran. This shows us that it is not our physical appearance or clothing which matters but rather our knowledge and piety which should be valued more highly. We can learn from this hadith that we should strive for excellence in our religious studies so we can be an example for others even if we do not have much material wealth or possessions.
