Sunan an-Nasai 750 (Book 9, Hadith 9) #15358
The Importance of Prayer Screening

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of having a barrier between the worshipper and any distractions while praying.

It was narrated that Abu Dharr said: The messenger of Allah said: "When anyone of you stands to pray, then he is screened if he has in front of him something as high as the back of a camel saddle. If he does not have something as high as the back of a camel saddle in front of him, then his prayer is nullified by a woman, a donkey or a black dog". I (one of the narrators)said: "What is the difference between a black dog, a yellow one and a red one?" He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah just like you and he said:"The black dog is a shaitan".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of having a barrier between oneself and any distractions while praying. It was narrated by Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah said that if one stands to pray, then they should have something as high as the back of a camel saddle in front of them to act as a screen. If this is not present, then their prayer will be nullified by anything from a woman, donkey or black dog passing in front. When asked what was different about a black dog compared to other colors, it was said that it was because it is considered to be an evil spirit or shaitan. This hadith teaches us that we should take extra care when praying and make sure there are no distractions around us so our prayers can be accepted by Allah. We should also strive to create an environment where we can focus on our prayers without being disturbed by anything else around us.
