Sunan an-Nasai 640 (Book 7, Hadith 15) #15248
Eating and Drinking During Adhan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) instructed that when Ibn Umm Maktum calls the Adhan, people should eat and drink, but when Bilal calls the Adhan, they should not eat nor drink.

It was narrated from Khubaib bin 'Abdur-Rahman that his paternal aunt Unaisah said: "The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: 'When Ibn Umm Maktum calls the Adhan, eat and drink, and when Bilal calls the Adhan, do not eat nor drink".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your actions in different situations; Respect religious practices; Respect towards those who call out for prayer as well as those who listen to it .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Khubaib bin 'Abdur-Rahman states that the Prophet Muhammad instructed his followers to behave differently during two different types of adhans. When Ibn Umm Maktum called the adhan, people were allowed to eat and drink; however, when Bilal called the adhan, they were not allowed to do so. This hadith teaches us that we must be mindful of our actions in different situations and respect religious practices even if it means making small changes in our daily routine such as refraining from eating or drinking during certain times of day. It also reminds us to be respectful towards those who are calling out for prayer as well as those who are listening to it.
