Sunan an-Nasai 458 (Book 5, Hadith 11) #15066
The Man from Najd's Commitment to Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man from Najd who asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about Islam and was told to pray five times a day, fast during Ramadan, and pay Zakat. He said he would do no more or less than that and the Prophet said he would be saved if he was telling the truth.

It was narrated from Abu Suhail, from his father, that he heard Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah say: "A man from the people of Najd came to the Messenger of Allah with unkempt hair. We could hear him talking loudly but we could not understand what he was saying until he came closer. He was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah said to him: 'Five prayers each day and night'. He said: 'Do I have to do anything else' He said: 'No, unless you do it voluntarily'. He said: 'And fasting the month of Ramadan'. He said: 'Do I have to do anything else?' He said: 'No, unless you do it voluntarily'. And the Messenger of Allah mentioned Zakah to him, and he said: 'Do I have to do anything else?' He said: 'No, unless you do it voluntarily'. The man left saying: 'By Allah, I will not do any more than this or any less'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'He will achieve salvation, if he is speaking the truth'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings faithfully ; Do voluntary acts ; Strive for salvation .
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us of a man from Najd who came to ask the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about Islam. The Prophet told him that there were three pillars of faith in Islam; prayer, fasting during Ramadan, and paying zakat. He then asked if there was anything else he should do voluntarily but the Prophet said no unless it was something done out of his own free will. The man then committed himself to only doing what was required of him in terms of worshiping Allah and nothing more or less than that. The Prophet then said that if this man spoke truthfully then he would achieve salvation on Judgment Day. This hadith teaches us several values such as commitment to our faith by following its teachings without going beyond what is required or falling short in any way; it also teaches us not to neglect voluntary deeds as they are highly encouraged by Allah SWT for those who can afford them; finally it reminds us all that we must strive for salvation through our good deeds so we may be rewarded on Judgment Day with Paradise Insha'Allah!
