Sunan an-Nasai 365 (Book 3, Hadith 17) #14971
Praying During Menstruation

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a woman who asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) if she should stop praying due to her not becoming pure, to which he replied that it was not menstruation and she should only stop praying when her period comes.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "Fatimah bint Abi Hubaish said to the Messenger of Allah : 'O Messenger of Allah , I do not become pure. Should I stop praying?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'That is a vein and is not menstruation. When your period comes, stop praying, and when it has passed, then wash the blood from yourself and pray'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of prayer in Islam and how it is permissible for women to pray during their menstrual cycle. It also speaks of the importance of purity in Islam as well as how one can differentiate between menstrual blood and other forms of impurities. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Fatimah bint Abi Hubaish that what she was experiencing was not menstruation but rather a vein and thus she could continue to pray until her period came. When it did come, he advised her to wash away any blood from herself before resuming prayer again once it had passed. This hadith teaches us that we must be mindful of our purity when engaging in prayer and also highlights the importance of prayer in Islam regardless of gender or physical state.
