Sunan an-Nasai 320 (Book 1, Hadith 321) #14927
Purifying Without Water

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching 'Ammar a method of purification when water was not available.

It was narrated that Shaqiq said: "I was sitting with 'Abdullah and Abu Musa, and Abu Musa said: 'Have you not heard what 'Ammar said to 'Umar: 'The Messenger of Allah sent me on an errand and I became Junub, and I could not find water, so I rolled in the earth then I came to the Prophet and told him about'. He said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this,' and he struck the earth with his hands, then wiped his hands, then knocked them together to remove the dust, then he wiped his right hand with his left and his left hand with his right, palm to palm, and wiped his face'." Then 'Abdullah said: "Did you not see that 'Umar was not convinced by what 'Ammar said?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions given by prophets/messengers of Allah even if they seem strange at first glance; Find alternative methods for performing religious duties when necessary; Trusting in Allah's teachings; Wipe your hands together before wiping your face with them; Roll in earth or sand when no access to water is available for purification purposes .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on purifying oneself without water. In this hadith, Shaqiq was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa when Abu Musa mentioned that he heard from Ammar that he was sent on an errand by the Prophet but became Junub and could not find any water to purify himself. The Prophet then taught him a method of purifying himself without using water which involved rolling in the earth then wiping his hands together to remove any dust before wiping his face with them. Umar was not convinced by what Ammar said but it turned out to be true as it came from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. This hadith teaches us that even if we do not have access to water for purification purposes, there are other methods we can use instead such as rolling in earth or sand and wiping our hands together before wiping our face with them. It also teaches us that we should always trust in Allah's teachings even if they seem strange or unusual at first glance.
