Sunan an-Nasai 319 (Book 1, Hadith 320) #14926
Praying without Wudu

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a man who became Junub and could not find any water to perform wudu. 'Umar advised him not to pray, but 'Ammar reminded him of a time when he and 'Umar were on a campaign and became Junub, but still prayed by rolling in the dust. The Prophet then said that this would have been sufficient for them.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abza, from his father, that a man came to 'Umar, may Allah be please with him, and said: "I have become Junub and I cannot find any water"'.Umar said: "Do not pray"'.Ammar said: "Do you not remember, O Commander of the Believers, when you and I were on a campaign and became Junub, and we could not find any water. You did not pray, but I rolled in the dust then prayed. When we came to the Messenger of Allah I told him about that and he said: 'This would have been sufficient for you,' and then Prophet struck the earth with his hands then blew on them and wiped his face and hands - (one of the narrators) Salamah was uncertain and said: "I do not know if he said it should be up to the elbows or just the hands". - 'Umar said: "We will let you bear the burden of what you took upon yourself". (One of the narrators) Shu'bah said: "He used to say the hands, face and forearms". (Another) Mansur said to him: "What are you saying? No one mentions the forearms except you". Salamah was not certain and said: "I do not know whether he mentioned the forearms or not".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray regularly even when facing difficulty or lack resources needed for ablution before prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the importance of prayer in Islam and how it can be performed even without wudu or ablution if necessary. In this hadith, a man came to Umar asking what he should do as he was junub and could not find any water to perform wudu with. Umar advised him not to pray, however Ammar reminded him of an incident where they were on a campaign together and both became junub but still managed to pray by rolling in the dust instead of performing wudu with water. When they reported this incident back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said that this would have been sufficient for them instead of performing wudu with water if necessary. This teaches us that prayer is very important in Islam even if we cannot perform it perfectly due to certain circumstances such as lack of access or availability of water or other resources needed for ablution before prayer.
