Sahih Muslim 2779c (Book 51, Hadith 14) #14101
The Prophet's Response to Dispute

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a dispute between Hudhaifa and someone from Aqaba, and how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) responded to it. He cursed those who went ahead of him despite his warning not to do so.

Abu Tufail reported that there was a dispute between Hudhaifa and one from the people of Aqaba as it happens amongst people. He said: I adjure you by Allah to tell me as to how many people from Aqaba were. The people said to him (Hudhaifa) to inform him as he had asked. We have been informed that they were fourteen and If you are to be counted amongst them, then they would be fifteen and I state by Allah that twelve amongst them were the enemies of Allah and of His Messenger in this world. The rest of the three put forward this excuse: We did not hear the announcement of Allah's Messenger and we were not aware of the intention of the people as he (the Holy Prophet) had been in the hot atmosphere. He (the Holy Prophet) then said: The water is small in quantity (at the next station). So nobody should go ahead of me, but he found people who had gone ahead of him and he cursed them on that day.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey your elders even if you don't understand why they are asking you to do something .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a dispute between Hudhaifa and someone from Aqaba, which was resolved by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was revealed that there were fourteen people involved in the dispute, but if Hudhaifa was counted among them then they would be fifteen. Twelve of these people were enemies of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ in this world, while the other three put forward an excuse that they did not hear the announcement of Allah's Messenger ﷺ or understand what he meant when he said something due to being in a hot atmosphere. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ then warned them not to go ahead of him at their next station as there would be little water available there, but some people still went ahead despite his warning and he cursed them on that day for disobeying him. This hadith teaches us that we should always obey our elders even if we don't understand why they are asking us to do something because it could be for our own benefit or protection in the long run. We should also try our best not to get involved in disputes as it can lead us astray from following Allah's commands and teachings which will ultimately lead us away from Paradise instead of towards it.
