Visiting Graves and Praying for the Dead

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visited the grave of Abdullah ibn Ubayy and prayed for him.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger came to the grave of 'Abdullah b. Ubayy as he was placed in that. The rest of the hadith is the same.
حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الأَزْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُبَىٍّ بَعْدَ مَا أُدْخِلَ حُفْرَتَهُ ‏.‏ فَذَكَرَ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ سُفْيَانَ

This hadith is about visiting graves and praying for the dead. It is narrated by Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who reported that Allah's Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) visited the grave of Abdullah ibn Ubayy. He stood at his grave and prayed for him. This hadith teaches us to remember those who have passed away, to visit their graves, and to pray for them so that they may receive mercy from Allah in the afterlife. It also reminds us of our mortality; we should strive to do good deeds while we are alive so that we can be remembered fondly after our death as well.
