Sahih Muslim 2675a (Book 48, Hadith 1) #13878
Allah's Nearness to His Servants

SUMMARY: Allah is always near to those who think of Him and remember Him.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, thus stated: I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near Me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the closeness of Allah to His servants. It tells us that when we think about Allah or remember Him in our hearts or in a gathering, He remembers us even more than we do. Furthermore, it states that if we draw near to Him by the span of a palm He draws near us by the cubit and if we walk towards Him He rushes towards us. This hadith teaches us that no matter how far away from Allah we may feel at times due to our sins or lack of faith; He is always close and ready for repentance. We should never forget this fact and strive to be closer to Him through prayer and remembrance so that He can be closer still.
