Sahih Muslim 2535a (Book 44, Hadith 304) #13554
Qualities of People in Different Generations

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the qualities of people in different generations, with the best being those of the Prophet's age, followed by those who come after them. It then goes on to describe a generation that will be dishonest and untrustworthy.

Imran b. Husain reported Allah's-Messenger as saying: The best among you (are) the people (who belong to) my age. Then those next to them, then those next to them, then those next to them'.Imran said: I do not know whether Allah's Messenger said twice or thrice (the words:" Then next" ) after (saying) about his (own age but he then said): Then after them (after successors or those who would succeed them) would come a people who would give evidence before they are asked for it, and would be dishonest and not trustworthy, who would make vows but would not fulfill them, and would be significant in being bulky.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for excellence no matter what your age is .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the qualities of people in different generations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that his own generation was the best among all, followed by those who come after them and so on. He then went on to describe a generation that would come after these successors which would be dishonest and untrustworthy, making vows but not fulfilling them and being bulky or significant in size. This hadith teaches us to strive for excellence no matter what our age is and also warns us against dishonesty and untrustworthiness as it is not something we should aspire for or practice as Muslims.
