Sahih Muslim 2341b (Book 43, Hadith 132) #13157
Dyeing Hair in Islam

SUMMARY: Anas b. Malik was asked about whether the Prophet Muhammad dyed his hair and he replied that he had not reached the stage where dyeing was necessary, but Abu Bakr did dye his hair with henna.

Ibn Sirin reported: I asked Anas b. Malik whether Allah's Messenger dyed his hair. He said: He had not reached the stage when (he needed) dyeing (of his white hair). He had a few white hair in his beard. I said to him: Did Abu Bakr dye his hair? He said: Yes, with Hina (henna).

QUICK LESSONS:
To maintain natural appearance and avoid unnecessary changes for vanity/prideful display of beauty

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about dyeing one's hair in Islam. It is narrated by Ibn Sirin who asked Anas b. Malik if the Prophet Muhammad ever dyed his hair, to which he replied that he had not reached a stage where it was necessary for him to do so yet, but Abu Bakr did dye his hair with henna. This suggests that while it is permissible to dye one's hair in Islam, it should only be done when absolutely necessary and not as a form of vanity or pride. The lesson here is that Muslims should strive to maintain their natural appearance and avoid any unnecessary changes or alterations for the sake of vanity or prideful display of beauty.
