Sahih Muslim 2259 (Book 41, Hadith 10) #12983
The Value of Food Over Poetry

SUMMARY: It is better to fill one's belly with food than to fill one's brain with poetry.

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri reported: We were going with Allah's Messenger . As we reached the place (known as) 'Arj there met (us) a poet who had been reciting poetry. Thereupon Allah's Messenger said: Catch the satan or detain the satan, for filling the belly of a man with pus is better than stuffing his brain with poetry.

QUICK LESSONS:
Prioritize needs over leisure activities; Provide sustenance for oneself and others; Focus on what provides physical benefit rather than what does not provide any physical benefit.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri, speaks about the importance of food over poetry. In this hadith, Allah’s Messenger was travelling with a group of people when they encountered a poet reciting his work. Upon hearing this, Allah’s Messenger said “Catch the satan or detain the satan, for filling the belly of a man with pus is better than stuffing his brain with poetry.” This statement emphasizes that it is more important to focus on providing sustenance for oneself and others rather than spending time on activities such as reciting poetry which do not provide any physical benefit. This hadith teaches us that we should prioritize our needs and those of others before engaging in leisure activities such as reading or writing poems.
