Sahih al-Bukhari 1341 (Book 23, Hadith 96) #1288
The Sinfulness of Decorating Graves

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against the practice of making places of worship at graves and decorating them with pictures, as this is considered to be a bad deed in the sight of Allah.

Narrated 'Aisha: When the Prophet became ill, some of his wives talked about a church which they had seen in Ethiopia and it was called Mariya. Um Salma and Um Habiba had been to Ethiopia, and both of them narrated its (the Church's) beauty and the pictures it contained. The Prophet raised his head and said, "Those are the people who, whenever a pious man dies amongst them, make a place of worship at his grave and then they make those pictures in it. Those are the worst creatures in the Sight of Allah".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Aisha and it speaks about how some wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were talking about a church they had seen in Ethiopia. They described its beauty and the pictures it contained. In response to this conversation, the Prophet ﷺ warned against making places of worship at graves and decorating them with pictures as this is considered to be a bad deed in the sight of Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should not make places for worship at graves or decorate them with images as it goes against Islamic teachings. We should instead focus on worshipping Allah alone without any intermediaries or symbols that could lead us astray from His path.
