Sahih Muslim 287d, 2214a (Book 39, Hadith 116) #12854
The Benefits of Indian Aloeswood

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advising a woman to use Indian Aloeswood for her son's swollen uvula and pleurisy.

Umm Qais, daughter of Mihsan, the sister of 'Ukasha b. Mihsan said: I visited Allah's Messenger along with my son who had not, by that time, been weaned and he urinated over his (clothes). He ordered water to be brought and sprinkled (it) over them. She (further) said: I visited him (Allah's Apostle) along with my son and I had squeezed the swelling in the uvula, whereupon he said: Why do you afflict your children by compressing like this? Use this Indian Aloeswood, for it contains seven types of remedies, one among them being a remedy for pleurisy. It is applied through the nose for a swelling of the uvula and poured into the side of the mouth for pleurisy.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek out natural remedies first before resorting to extreme measures such as squeezing or compressing an area which may cause more harm than good in some cases .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to a woman who visited him with her son who had not been weaned yet. Her son had urinated on his clothes and the Prophet ordered water to be sprinkled over them. She also mentioned that she had squeezed her son's swollen uvula and the Prophet advised her against it and told her to use Indian Aloe wood instead as it contains seven types of remedies, one of which was for pleurisy. He said that it should be applied through the nose for swelling in the uvula and poured into the side of mouth for pleurisy. This shows us how knowledgeable our beloved prophet was in medicine as well as how compassionate he was towards children even though they were not his own offspring. He showed kindness by ordering water to be sprinkled over soiled clothes instead of reprimanding or scolding them like many people would have done at that time period. It also teaches us that we should always seek out natural remedies before resorting to more extreme measures such as squeezing or compressing an area which may cause more harm than good in some cases.
