Sahih Muslim 2127d (Book 37, Hadith 189) #12674
Cheating Forbidden by Allah's Apostle

SUMMARY: This hadith is about how Mu'awiya warned against cheating and how Allah's Apostle forbade it.

Sa, id b. Musayyib reported that Mu'awiya said one day: Should I narrate to you the evil make-up. Allah's Apostle forbade cheating. It was during that time that a person came with a staff and there was a cloth on its head, whereupon Mu, awiya said: Behold, that is cheating. Qatada said: This implies how women artificially increase their hair with the help of rags.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest in your dealings, Avoid any form of deceit or dishonesty

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the importance of avoiding deceit and cheating in all aspects of life. It was narrated by Sa,id b. Musayyib who reported that Mu'awiya said one day that he should narrate to them the evil make-up. He then went on to explain how Allah's Apostle forbade cheating and gave an example of a person coming with a staff with a cloth on its head as an example of what constitutes as cheating. Qatada then explained this further by saying it implies artificially increasing hair with the help of rags. This hadith teaches us to be honest in our dealings and not resort to any form of deceit or dishonesty in order to gain something for ourselves or others around us. We must also be aware that even small acts such as artificially increasing hair can be considered as forms of deceit and should therefore be avoided at all costs if we wish to live according to Islamic teachings.
