Sahih Muslim 2119a (Book 37, Hadith 165) #12650
Blessing a Newborn Child

SUMMARY: Umm Sulaim asked Anas to take her newborn child to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) so that he could bless the child by chewing some dates and touching his palate with it.

Anas reported that Umm Sulaim gave birth to a child. She said to him: Anas, see that nothing is given to this child until he is brought to Allah's Apostle in the morning, so that he should chew some dates and touch his palate with it. I went to him in the morning and he was in the garden at that time having the mantle of Jauniyya over him and he was bus in cauterising (the camels) which had been brought to him (as spoils of war) in victory (over the enemy).

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek blessings for your children
EXPLANATIONS:
Umm Sulaim wanted her newborn baby to be blessed by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She asked Anas ibn Malik to take the baby to him in the morning. When they arrived at the garden where he was staying, they found him wearing a mantle of Jauniyya and busy cauterising camels which had been brought as spoils of war from a victory over an enemy. He then blessed the baby by chewing some dates and touching his palate with it. This hadith teaches us that we should seek blessings for our children from Allah's Messenger and also shows us how much importance was given to seeking blessings for children in Islam. It also highlights how important it is for Muslims to celebrate their victories in battle as this was done through cauterising camels which were brought as spoils of war.
