Sahih al-Bukhari 1303 (Book 23, Hadith 61) #1253
Compassion in Times of Grief

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) showed mercy and compassion when his son Ibrahim was on his deathbed.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: We went with Allah's Messenger (pbuh) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the wet-nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet). Allah's Messenger took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him and later we entered Abu Saif's house and at that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah's Messenger (pbuh) started shedding tears'.Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf said, "O Allah's Apostle, even you are weeping!" He said, "O Ibn 'Auf, this is mercy". Then he wept more and said, "The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion towards others who are going through difficult times in their lives .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) reaction to the death of his son Ibrahim. When he visited Abu Saif's house, he found that Ibrahim was in his last breaths and started to cry. His companion Abdur Rahman bin Auf asked why he was crying even though it is a natural thing for humans to do when they are sad or grieving. The Prophet replied that this is mercy and continued to weep more out of grief for the separation from his son. This hadith teaches us that it is okay to show emotions during times of grief and sadness as long as we remember not to say anything displeasing our Lord. It also shows us how important it is for us to be compassionate towards others who are going through difficult times in their lives, just like how the Prophet showed compassion towards his own son even though he knew what would happen next.
