Sahih Muslim 2054c (Book 36, Hadith 235) #12463
Hospitality and Generosity Rewarded

SUMMARY: A man asked the Prophet for hospitality, and Abu Talha offered to host him. This led to the revelation of a verse in the Quran.

Abu Huraira reported that a man came to Allah's Messenger so that he should entertain him as a guest, but he had nothing with which he could entertain him. He, therefore, asked if there was any person who would entertain him (assuring the audience) that Allah would show mercy to him. A person from the Ansar who was called Abu Talha stood up and he took him to his house. The rest of the hadith is the same and mention is (also) made in that about the revelation of the verse as narrated by Waki'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of hospitality and generosity. It tells us that when we are generous with others, Allah will show mercy upon us. The story is about a man who asked Prophet Muhammad for hospitality but he had nothing to offer him. Abu Talha from Ansar then offered his own home as a place for this man to stay in as a guest. As a result of this act of kindness, Allah revealed a verse in the Quran which praised Abu Talha's generosity and kindness towards others. This hadith teaches us that when we are kind and generous towards others, Allah will reward us with His mercy and blessings. We should always strive to be hospitable towards our guests no matter what our circumstances may be because it is an act that pleases Allah greatly.
