Sahih Muslim 2054b (Book 36, Hadith 234) #12462
Generosity in Need

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a man from the Ansar who, despite having nothing to offer, still gave what he had to a guest.

Abu Huraira reported that a guest spent the night with a person from the Ansar who had nothing with him but food (sufficient) for his own self and his children. He said to his wife: (Lull) the children to sleep, and put out the lamp, and serve the guest with what you have with you. It was on this occasion that this verse was revealed:" Those who prefer the needy to their own selves in spite of the fact that they are themselves in pressing need" (LIX. 9).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and kind towards others even if you don't have much yourself.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells the story of a man from the Ansar who was in need but still offered what he had to his guest. Despite having nothing for himself and his children, he asked his wife to put out the lamp and serve their guest with whatever they have. This act of generosity was so great that it inspired Allah SWT to reveal this verse in the Quran which praises those who prefer others over themselves even when they are in need. The lesson here is that we should always be generous and kind towards others even if we don't have much ourselves. We should never forget that Allah SWT will reward us for our good deeds no matter how small they may seem.
