Eating From Nearby Food

SUMMARY: One should eat from the food that is closest to them.

Umar b. Abu Salama reported: I (had the opportunity) one day to dine with Allah's Messenger , and I picked up flesh from around the dish. Thereupon Allah's Messenger said: Eat from that which is near to you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful in your actions; practice moderation; eat only what's necessary; don't waste food; share with others if needed; be conscious of your surroundings even while eating a meal

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of eating from the food that is closest to us. It encourages us to be mindful of our actions and not take more than what we need, especially when it comes to food. We should be aware of how much we are taking and not take more than necessary, as this can lead to wastage and deprive others who may need it more than us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us about being mindful in our actions, as he said “Eat from that which is near you” when Umar b. Abu Salama was picking up flesh from around the dish during a meal with him ﷺ . This hadith reminds us of how important it is for all Muslims to practice moderation in their lives and be conscious of their actions at all times, even when it comes something as simple as eating a meal.
