Sahih Muslim 2021 (Book 36, Hadith 142) #12372
Eating with Right Hand

SUMMARY: Eating with the right hand is preferred over the left hand, and vanity should not prevent one from doing so.

Salama b. Akwa' reported on the authority of his father that a person ate in the presence of Allah's Messenger with his left hand, whereupon he said: Eat with your right hand. He said: I cannot do that, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: May you not be able to do that. It was vanity that prevented him from doing it, and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do what is pleasing to Allah SWT
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about eating with the right hand being preferred over eating with the left hand. It also speaks about how vanity can prevent us from doing something that is good for us, such as eating with our right hands. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching his companions to eat in a manner that would be pleasing to Allah SWT and he warned them against letting their vanity get in the way of this practice. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to do what is pleasing to Allah SWT even if it means going against our own desires or pride. We should also be mindful of how we act and not let our pride or ego get in the way of doing what is right and proper according to Islamic teachings.
