Sahih Muslim 2017a (Book 36, Hadith 133) #12363
Eating with the Blessing of Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that food should not be eaten until Allah's name is mentioned, and that Satan considers food lawful if Allah's name is not mentioned.

Hudhaifa reported: When we attended a dinner along with the Messenger of Allah we did not lay our hands on the food until Allah's Messenger had laid his hand and commenced eating (the food). Once we went with him to a dinner when a girl came rushingly as it someone had been pursuing her. She was about to lay her hand on the food, when Allah's Messenger caught her hand. Then a desert Arab came there (rushingly) as if someone had been pursuing him. He (the Holy Prophet) caught his hand; and then Allah's Messenger said: Satan considers that food lawful on which Allah's name is not mentioned. He had brought this girl so that the food might be made lawful for him and I caught her hand. And he had brought a desert Arab so that (the food) might be lawful for him. So I caught his hand. By Him, in Whose hand is my life, it was (Satan's) hand that was in my hand along with her hand.

QUICK LESSONS:
Mentioning God's Name before eating or drinking anything in order to make sure its permissible according to Islamic law .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of mentioning Allah’s name before eating. It was narrated by Hudhaifa, who said that when he and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) attended a dinner, they would not lay their hands on the food until he had laid his hand and commenced eating. On one occasion, a girl came rushingly as if someone was pursuing her. She was about to lay her hand on the food when the Prophet caught her hand. Then a desert Arab came there as if someone was pursuing him too; so he also caught his hand. The Prophet then said that Satan considers food lawful on which Allah’s name is not mentioned; so he had brought this girl so that it would be made lawful for him and he had brought a desert Arab so it would be made lawful for him too. We learn from this hadith how important it is to mention Allah’s name before we eat or drink anything in order to make sure it is permissible according to Islamic law; otherwise, we are inviting Satan into our lives!
